Collecting Anaea butterflies

Anaea are very interesting and colorful neotropical butterflies. Insect collectors appreciate them very much for their beauty and the shape of their wings. Long grouped in the single genus Anaea, this genus has been divided into many subgenera Anaea, Memphis, Consul, Fountainea for example.

The most interesting Anaea butterflies.

Some species are quite rare in collections like Anaea tyrianthina, Memphis marylena or Fountainea nobilis peralta from Costa Rica. Even if they don't reach the level or rare Agrias butterflies, the rarest Anaea specimens can easily reach $1,000.00 on the market. On the contrary, the most common Anaea butterflies will be found for few dollars.

Where to find Anaea butterflies ?

Anaea like to fly in forests or treed peri-urban areas. They are often found foraging for flowers in the early morning on sunny days. The large primary forests of Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela are the places where the rarest and most sought after species of Anaea are found by entomologists. They are exciting Nymphalidae to study and collect. The most beautiful collections of Anaea can be found in the British Museum in London, in the Museum of Paris and in the various museums of Natural History in the United States. Unfortunately the beautiful Anaea collection of the Museum of Brazil was lost in the recent fire of this museum.
