A smilodon skull is a masterpiece of any fossil collections. But count at least $10,000 for a nicely preserved smilodon skull. Indeed, it is very difficult to find a complete smilodon skulls (most of the time we found only their canines) and there are several museums and collectors looking for them, so their value on the market is very high.

What is the difference between a Smilodon and a saber-toothed cat ?

There were more than one hundred different species of saber-toothed cats, all of them are now extinct. Smilodons were a genus of saber-toothed cats who lived in America. They disappeared 100,000 years ago and they had some impressive canines of 32cm for the largest specimens. On this page, you will also find several Machairodus fossils. Machairodus was a genus of saber-toothed cat who lived in North America, Eurasia and Africa. Machairodus were as big as a modern lion or tiger ! The term "saber-toothed tiger" is rather incorrect as they are not closely linked with our modern tiger, Panthera tigris

How much is a saber-toothed tiger skull worth ?

Well it all depends of the size and the preservation state of the saber-toothed cat skull. The best skull have reached a crazy valorisation of $320,000. You will find here some rare skull fossils of Machairodus horribilis for $10,000 and more. A pair of canines will be found around $3,000.
