A selection of rare Parnassius species for insect collectors
Several rare Parnassius species can be legally found online, especially the wonderful Parnassius from Central Asia. You will find on this page some interesting Parnassius charltonius aenigma female, some Parnassius hardwickii, some newly described Parnassius davydovi risto paratype. We will also list some other hard-to-find Parnassius like Parnassius thibetanus from Chuwo. They all live in moutainous area from Central Asia.
Legal status of Parnassius species.
The only CITES Parnassius species is Parnassius apollo. It means you cannot supply it without having a CITES I permit. Some CITES I species are given by the CITES organization when the supplier can prove that the specimens is historic and older than the CITES protection date.
Then all French and EU Parnassius are protected by local laws : Parnassius sacerdos, Parnassius mnemosyne.
To make it simple, there is no protection status for Asian Parnassius (except apollo) and all Western Europe Parnassius are protected and can be proposed with permit only. Parnassius species are endangered by global warming and over-growing vegetation in low altitude mountains of Western Europe. Insect collections are very precious tools to study the repartition of Parnassius species in the past and where they have disappeared due to climate change or habitat destruction by alpine ski resorts.
