Collecting Charaxes butterflies

Charaxes butterflies have always been very popular among insect collectors and entomologists. In the 19th century, a male of Charaxes fournierae was a very expensive specimen and it is still the case today. Charaxes are very interesting to study for their beauty, their variety and the rarity of some Charaxes species. Charaxes are often caught with bait traps : some rotten bananas are put inside a trap which is fixed in the forest canopy, the bait will attract male and female Charaxes.

What are the rarest Charaxes species ?

It is hard to say as many Charaxes species are rare in collection. But we can definitely say that Charaxes jolybouyeri, Charaxes lydiae or Charaxes velox from Socotra island are rare in collection. A female of Charaxes legeri from Nigeria will also reach a very high value, above $500. Some Charaxes females have been only recently described, like the female of Charaxes marki in 2015 by Bernard Turlin.
